Me n Elvis by Charlie Hodge - A Must have Elvis book
Charlie was with Elvis continuously from their Army days together, and they had met even before then when Charlie was singing professionally with a gospel group. Charlie was the only professional musician and singer in the Memphis Mafia. While usually introduced as only the water and scarf guy, he functioned as Elvis' stage manager, sang harmony and back-up, and played acoustic guitar on stage. He lived on the grounds of Graceland for many years. He also was one of the few who screened and recommended new material. Elvis even recorded a duet with Charlie soon after their Army days ("I Will Be Home Again"). Considering all that, it's surprising we never heard more about Elvis from Charlie Hodge. Charlie was one of the few who never turned against Elvis in later years - he was unbelievably loyal. Charlie was willing to take the fall, which could have involved a long prison sentence, for a very unfortunate incident that took place during Elvis' lowest period. Fortunately for all concerned, it turned out better than it might have.
