Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock 'N' Roll Music by Greil Marcus - Essential book for all music historians

Image
Frank Rich reviewed the book for The Village Voice and wrote that Marcus' "frame of reference is so vast that he never runs out of connections worth making between the music he loves and just about anything else that matters in American art and life.” [5] David Itzkoff and Alan Light , in a 2005 critical roundup of music-related books, claimed that Mystery Train is "perhaps the finest book ever written about pop music." [6] New York Times literary critic Dwight Garner stated in 2015 that "most critics and serious listeners think [Mystery Train]’s almost certainly the best book yet written about American music in general, and about rock in particular." [5] In 2011, Time magazine picked it among the "100 best and most influential [books] written in English since 1923. ELVIS and the COLONEL by Dirk Vellenga with Mick Farren 1st Edition

Image
This is a profile of Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley's "business manager". His real name was Andreas van Kuijk and he was a carnival promoter from Holland who stowed away to America in 1926 where he quickly learnt the art of super salesmanship and "shortchanging suckers". He also gained himself an honorary Louisiana commission as a colonel. But how did he maintain such a hold over Elvis, especially in view of his dislike of rock'n'roll? For 20 years they were thought of as a team like Abbott and Costello. In the second half of the book, the author details their relationship. Parker was a compulsive gambler and appears to have gambled away his fortune.  Hardcover: 288 pages Publisher: Grafton; 1st ed. edition (12 Jan. 1989) ex-library book                                                                    ...

Me n Elvis by Charlie Hodge - A Must have Elvis book

Image
Charlie was with Elvis continuously from their Army days together, and they had met even before then when Charlie was singing professionally with a gospel group. Charlie was the only professional musician and singer in the Memphis Mafia. While usually introduced as only the water and scarf guy, he functioned as Elvis' stage manager, sang harmony and back-up, and played acoustic guitar on stage. He lived on the grounds of Graceland for many years. He also was one of the few who screened and recommended new material. Elvis even recorded a duet with Charlie soon after their Army days ("I Will Be Home Again"). Considering all that, it's surprising we never heard more about Elvis from Charlie Hodge. Charlie was one of the few who never turned against Elvis in later years - he was unbelievably loyal. Charlie was willing to take the fall, which could have involved a long prison sentence, for a very unfortunate incident that took place during Elvis' lowest period. Fortun...

Elvis People: The Cult of the King by Ted Harrison

Image
An analysis of the cult of Elvis Presley which could be argued is an embryonic religion. There is a fanatical interest in "relics" of the King, his birthplace is preserved as a shrine and his archive of recorded music has, to many fans, the authority of scripture. "Elvis Aaron Presley died on August 16th, 1977. More than fifteen years later, his fans remain fiercely loyal. What is more, they are being joined by others who only know the myth, not the man. For them, Elvis will live forever." Condition: used, binding tight, no missing pages £7 + p&p

INSIDE ELVIS by ED PARKER

Image
In reality, very few people really did know Elvis. Ed, often referred to by Elvis, as "my second daddy" was such a person. As the fierce-eyed, silver-streaked Kenpo combatant stepped forward in 1978, he resolved to tell his story. Ed was the man Elvis chose as his strong right arm, a true brother, friend, confident, as well as Elvis' protective companion. Ed had enjoyed seventeen years of close, personal association with Elvis Presley. Frequently travelling together, Ed observed, listened, and understood as they shared their personal confidences and innermost feelings with one another. He had a wealth of insights and anecdotes about his close friend and was determined to share those insights in an incredible backstage look at one of the most famous men in the world--a man millions admired, thousands worshipped, but only a handful knew or understood. Still, in a state of grief, he wrote of the loss of his "friend" Elvis; and shared insights into the King's o...

ELVIS - WHAT HAPPENED? by Red and Sonny West, Dave Hebler

Image
Elvis: What Happened? is a book about the personal life of singer Elvis Presley . The book, which is based on the personal accounts of three of Elvis' former bodyguards, went into detail on the singer’s dangerous drug-dependence. His death, only two weeks after the book’s publication in July 1977, made it highly topical and helped boost its sales to over 3 million. The guards, Robert Gene West , his cousin Sonny West , and David Hebler, had been fired, officially for cost-saving reasons, but at the time, many suspected it was because they had been heavily critical of Elvis’ increasing intake of, and dependence upon, various drugs. With help from reporter Steve Dunleavy , they produced the tell-all memoir which they claimed to be a friendly warning, rather than a money-making exercise. Since the singer’s death, most of its claims have proven accurate. Condition: used, binding tight, no missing pages £20 + p&p
